Do you know about Glasgow Disc Golf Club?

Timmy Murphy & RickRick enjoying the British Nationals hosted by the GDGC

Well, if you don't, please read on.

They are, quite simply, mind blowing.

Not only were they the hosts for the British Nationals Matchplay event earlier this year but they continued the growth of the sport and gave birth to Ruchill Park.

They , along with a few others in the club, created a fantastic 9 hole course based in the West end of Glasgow with a brilliant viewpoint at the heart. Surely the highest point in the city I'm told. The views were breathtaking.

My journey to the course was adventurous as always. Arriving with alot of weight, around 2am in the morning with a head torch.

Safe and sound in the morning, I had a short walk around a few of the holes, had breakfast, stretched and then my battery died. Unfortunately that was my only way of knowing where the players meeting was so I was a little late.

We played 27 holes of the same 9. So 3 times round. IT WAS BRUTAL. Over 40mph winds, usually a head wind on most holes it felt like but it was just swirling around for fun. Although it did make for a very exciting day.

All in pink, I finished with 2+ for the 18 and 3 up on 2nd place. The final nine however was insane. Great card! I finally got to play with Seamus from Reboot Disc Golf too!

I managed to fight off strong competition from Rory oh Rory and some amazing putting from Iain. I was not keeping score, just battling the elements and fearing comebacks.

It was my first Open win and I could not be more proud.

But more importantly I have been shown exactly how a club can really pull together and create something brilliant. Not just Ruchill but the club itself. Such a close knit group who really care about the sport and helping the local community.

Hats off to you all. I really mean that. What an absolute pleasure to be hosted by such kind, considerate and organised people.

At club level in the UK, we have so many shining examples of what we can do with very little but a lot of hard work.

Basingstoke, Croydon, Quarry Park, Manchester, the list is endless. Keep up the good everybody. You are all the foundation that will grow the sport in the most natural way. The right way.

Good news guys n gals, Newcastle Disc Golf Club has just had its birthday today. The same birthday as the UK's most famous player......Derek "The Wind" Robbins. He is still one of the very best players in the world!
